Charleston VA to move into former naval hospital Veterans Affairs Secretary James B. Peake has approved a proposal by the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center to acquire the former naval hospital building on Rivers Avenue. The Charleston VA has been leasing space in the building to augment its services at the downtown hospital.
Supreme Court dissolves trust for investing benefits The court has ruled that a trust fund created by the Municipal Association of South Carolina to help cities pay post-retirement benefits could not invest in the stock of publicly traded companies and was unconstitutional. A Charleston employee filed the friendly lawsuit at the behest of the association asking the S.C. Supreme Court to make the ruling.
Mount Pleasant to consider new housing ordinance The Mount Pleasant Planning Commission will consider a new zoning district Wednesday to encourage developers to build more work force housing, or units considered to be within the price range of a family of four with a household income up to $70,050. Any recommendations from the commission require final approval by the Town Council.
Charleston considers loan to building arts college Charleston could loan $734,500 to the American College of the Building Arts, which was founded in 1998 to teach students traditional building methods needed for Charlestons historic preservation efforts.
Charleston Chamber preparing for trip to China The Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce will have an informational meeting Sept. 17 for anyone interested in attending its nine-day trip to China next year. Reservations for the trip are due by Nov. 21.
Job of the Week The Medical University of South Carolina Medical Center is looking for a midnight pharmacist to work in Charleston. The full-time position requires permanent midnight shifts providing distributive and clinical pharmacy services to inpatients and outpatients at Medical University Hospital and clinics.
